TL;DR

  • Yes, you can get a Google review removed, but only if it violates Google's policies
  • An authentic negative review will not be removed, even if it feels unfair
  • Google removes: spam, fake reviews, harassment, offensive content, personal data, off-topic content
  • You cannot delete it yourself: you can only report it to Google for evaluation
  • For everything else, a public reply and review collection are your only effective tools

This question comes up every week with our clients. A 1-star review drops, often with no comment, sometimes with vague accusations. The immediate reflex: "Can I just get it removed?" The short answer: maybe. The full answer: here is exactly what Google says.

The short answer: yes, but…

Yes, Google can remove a review. But only if that review violates its content policies. Not because it is negative. Not because it feels unfair to you. Not because you disagree with the facts.

Who can get a Google review removed?

  • The review's author: they can delete or edit it themselves at any time.
  • Google: after a report, if the review breaks its policies.
  • You, the owner: you can report it, not delete it directly.

That is all. There is no magic button, no VIP procedure, no shortcut. If you want the concrete steps, we detailed them in our complete guide to deleting a Google review.

On your own: you spend 30 minutes looking for how to delete the review from your dashboard. You can't find it. The review stays.

With Saphek: we assess the review within 24h, determine whether it is reportable, and handle the entire procedure up to Google's decision, as part of our reputation management service.

What Google officially says

Google Business Profile's official policy is clear. Google removes reviews that violate its content policies. These policies are public and non-negotiable.

Google removes a review if:

  • It is spam or a fake review (account with no history, bulk reviews, fake profile).
  • There is a conflict of interest (review from an employee, a competitor, a self-review).
  • It contains harassment or threats.
  • It contains offensive content (insults, hate speech).
  • It includes personal information (phone number, private address).
  • It is off-topic (not about your business).
  • It contains illegal content.

Google does NOT remove a review if:

  • It is negative but authentic.
  • It describes a real bad experience.
  • It expresses an unfavorable opinion without breaking the rules.
  • You simply disagree with what is written.

The 4 steps to request removal

Have you identified a review that violates Google's policies? Here is the procedure in 4 steps.

Step 1 - Document the review

Before reporting, take a screenshot of the review with the date, the account name and the content. This documentation will be useful if you need to file an appeal.

Step 2 - Report via Google Business Profile

  1. Log in at business.google.com.
  2. Open your listing, Reviews section.
  3. Click the Report icon next to the review.
  4. Choose the most precise reason from the list.
  5. Click Send.

Step 3 - Wait and follow up

Google evaluates the report over several days (usually 3 to 10 business days). You receive an email notification. If the review is removed: done. If it is kept: move to step 4.

Step 4 - File an appeal

If Google declines the removal and you are convinced of the violation, submit an appeal via the official Google Business Profile form. Attach concrete evidence: screenshots, transaction data, anything proving the fraud.

On your own: you report it, Google refuses, and you don't know how to appeal. The review stays online for weeks.

With Saphek: we handle the initial report, the appeal if needed, and we write an optimized public reply during processing to limit the visible impact.

Timeline and follow-up

StepEstimated timeline
Processing the initial report3 to 10 business days
Notification of Google's decisionBy email (no guaranteed timeframe)
Processing an appeal2 to 4 weeks
Effective removal after decisionA few hours to 48h

One important point: Google does not commit to a guaranteed official timeframe. These estimates are based on field feedback in 2025-2026. Patience is mandatory.

What to do while you wait?

Do not stay passive. While Google processes your report:

  • Reply to the review publicly, in a professional and factual way.
  • Collect new positive reviews from your satisfied customers with an automated review collection system. 96% of consumers are willing to leave a review when asked (BrightLocal 2025). Our guide on getting more Google reviews covers the techniques that work.
  • Monitor whether other suspicious reviews of the same kind appear.

A suspicious review on your listing? Within 48h we assess whether it is reportable, and we handle the procedure.

Getting a Google review removed: the limits to know

A few realities nobody tells you clearly:

  • No agency can guarantee removal. The decision belongs to Google, not the agency.
  • Authentic negative reviews stay. That is the rule, no exception.
  • A rejected report can be appealed, but with additional evidence.
  • 71% of consumers will not consider a business rated below 3 stars (BrightLocal 2025). Your overall rating matters more than a single review.

The real strategy: combine reporting fraudulent reviews + professional replies + actively collecting new reviews. That is what lifts a rating durably. To know where you stand, start with a free express reputation audit.

Useful sources

FAQ - Can you delete a Google review?

Who can delete a Google review?

Three actors: the review's author (themselves), Google (if it violates the rules), and no one else. The listing owner can only report it, not delete it directly.

Does Google remove negative reviews?

No. Google does not remove a review simply because it is negative. It only removes reviews that violate its content policies (spam, fake reviews, harassment, etc.).

How long does it take to get a Google review removed?

Processing a report usually takes 3 to 10 business days. An appeal can take an additional 2 to 4 weeks. Google does not guarantee any timeframe.

Can you get a Google review removed without evidence?

You can report it without evidence, but the success rate is lower. For an appeal, evidence (screenshots, transaction data) is essential.

Can a lawyer force Google to remove a review?

In certain extreme cases (proven defamation, illegal content), a court procedure can lead to a removal injunction. It is slow, costly, and reserved for serious cases.

What if the review to remove is on Google Maps and not my listing?

The procedure is identical. Google Maps reviews and Google Business Profile reviews are the same. Report directly from Google Maps by clicking the report icon next to the review.
